NEWS RELEASE

Progressive champions Joel Sipress, Zack Filipovich, Barb Russ and Renee Van Nett will move Duluth forward

St. Paul, MNTakeAction Minnesota announced its endorsements for Joel Sipress (District 2), Renee Van Nett (District 4), Zack Filipovich (at-large), and Barb Russ (at-large) for Duluth City Council. The Board of Directors of the statewide people’s organization ratified members’ recommendation in August. The endorsement comes as the City Council moves closer to passing a sensible earned sick and safe time policy, a priority for TakeAction members in Duluth.

“Our endorsed candidates include progressive leaders fighting with us for earned sick and safe time. Each candidate understands the playing field isn’t level for workers and families—but it can and must be improved locally,” said Dan McGrath, TakeAction Minnesota’s executive director. “City hall is where progress is happening right now. These City Council candidates exemplify TakeAction Minnesota’s commitment to democracy and equity. We’ll do everything we can to make sure they win in November.”

Candidates that have TakeAction Minnesota’s endorsement will be backed by grassroots organizing forces known for pushing candidates across the finish line. For TakeAction Minnesota, municipal races lay important groundwork to expand the electorate and engage new voters heading into 2018.

“We believe it’s the job of elected officials to carry out the will of the people,” said Beth Kersting-Peterson, a local leader with TakeAction. “Each of these candidates understands what’s at stake for families in our community, and the importance of our local democracy. Our grassroots support is strong, and will help them win.”
