Seniors, caregivers, and individuals living with disabilities protest Medicaid cuts outside Rep. Jason Lewis’s home, during the August recess
Rep. Lewis recently wrote in a commentary he was “proud” of his vote on the GOP’s health care reform bill
(Woodbury, MN) — Today, seniors, caregivers, and activists living with disabilities delivered a letter to Rep. Jason Lewis’s home in Woodbury. Their message to the Congressman over the August recess is clear: protect Medicaid.
The threat to gut Medicaid continues in federal budget discussions. Cuts proposed to Medicaid are outlined in GOP Speaker Ryan’s federal budget resolution. Today’s demonstration was part of a nationwide day of action, protesting the $1.5 trillion in proposed cuts—which are even deeper than the GOP’s failed health care repeal bill.
TakeAction Minnesota members have vowed to keep up the pressure on Rep. Lewis. Proposed Medicaid cuts would hurt Minnesota families, including seniors and people with disabilities. Cuts would also be devastating for family caregivers and home care workers.
“My PCA would have to juggle even more work to keep up with the cost of living,” Debra Francis, an older Minnesotan and TakeAction member stated this morning. “Medicaid only provides the baseline of what thousands of families need.… Continue reading »

ST. CLOUD — A group of concerned local citizens held a peaceful rally Wednesday afternoon asking state leaders to pass their message to Congress to vote not to end the Affordable Care Act.
Several residents shared their personal stories on how the current health care system has helped their families.
Kathryn Schwartz Eckhardt says while her family has good health coverage, it took a frightening experience with her son who has a chronic respiratory condition, to realize others may be as lucky without the Affordable Care Act.
“My son is going to be fine because I can afford to take care of him. But millions of children rely on Medicaid and other public assistance to make sure they have access to care,” says Schwartz Eckhardt.
The Senate left for recess without voting on a bill after the Congressional Budget Office estimated it would cause 22 million people to lose coverage.
Jim Magnuson spoke on how his fathers life was taken too early because he couldn’t afford health care coverage.

NEWS RELEASE
(Burnsville, MN)—Over the weekend, TakeAction Minnesota hosted a community event in Burnsville to talk to constituents of Rep. Jason Lewis about the massive cuts to Medicaid he supported in the American Health Care Act. Constituents took part in a nationwide day of action to hold Republicans accountable for their careless attempts repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA), threatening the lives and financial security of millions of families.
“Defeating the ACA repeal is an extraordinary testament to the people across the country who rose up and took action,” said David Zaffrann, Health Care Program Manager with TakeAction Minnesota. “Thanks to incredible organizing and relentless pressure from constituents, we defeated this bill – but the fight for health care is not over.”
Congress only has two months to pass a federal budget. Cuts to Medicaid remain a threat. Health care advocates from Minnesota’s 3rd Congressional District will be trying to reach Congressman Jason Lewis. The first term Congressman has been largely absent from the public debate on health care.

Growing up as a kid with a disability, I felt both the stigma society places on people with disabilities, and the importance of connecting with people to make change.
I had “friends,” which I later learned often meant kids the teacher asked to talk to me. Add society stigma and misunderstanding about disabilities, along with meanness of kids at that age, and you have a pretty lonely, isolated childhood. Adults who weren’t directly taking care of me were either afraid of me, or walking on eggshells trying to say the right thing. I remember people praising me lavishly about being brave, and an inspiration. Although flattered at the time, I look back at this and often ask why.
As for services, most did not exist, and those that did were impossible to find. This was long before the days of e-mail or the internet. We had the Yellow Pages. You had to know someone who knew something. Families like mine who had complex medical issues from birth were on their own figuring out how to pay for the gargantuan medical bills.
My parents served on the first Governor’s Council on Developmental Disabilities. The group analyzes state policy for people with disability, makes recommendations to the governor, and provides research grants to improve the lives of people with disabilities.… Continue reading »

Citizens and local leaders call attention to impact of proposed Medicaid cuts and ACA repeal on Stearns County residents
St. Cloud, MN – Concerned citizens and local leaders called on Representative Emmer to reject proposals that will end the Affordable Care Act and gut life-saving Medicaid for 74 million people at a rally and news conference this afternoon.
The event was held in St. Cloud by Concerned Citizens of District 6, a grassroots group trying to reach Representative Emmer over the July recess, before the Senate is expected to vote on the GOP repeal bill. The Senate repeal bill closely mirrors the House repeal bill. It takes away coverage from 22 million people, weakens coverage and consumer protections, eliminates the Medicaid expansion, and ends Medicaid as we know it to pay for $541 billion in tax breaks for the wealthy and corporations.
Federal health care proposals have chilling and life-threatening effects for Minnesotans, including over 30,000 residents in Stearns County who are enrolled in Medicaid.
“I recognize that Representative Emmer, like many other Republicans, promised his party and his supporters that he would vote to repeal “Obamacare,” said Jim Read, a professor at the College of St.… Continue reading »

Minneapolis, MN – Minnesotans including TakeAction Minnesota members and health care advocates rallied today outside of Senator Klobuchar’s office as the U.S. Senate retreats from its course to gut life-saving Medicaid for 74 million families, children, seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities to pay for tax breaks for the wealthy and big corporations.
The Minnesota demonstration was part of a national “Medicaid Not Millionaires” Day of Action, aiming to curtail the GOP’s resolve to dismantle Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act.
“It’s no wonder Republicans in Congress wanted to hide this bill from the American people for as long as possible. It would strip health care from hundreds of thousands of Minnesotans and end Medicaid as we know it to pay for big tax breaks for the wealthy and big corporations,” said Carol White, a member of TakeAction Minnesota from Minneapolis. “Our message to Senator Klobuchar and Senator Franken is to keep up the fight. This bill is not only cruel for people like my daughter who relies on Medicaid even though she works, it is bad policy.”… Continue reading »

Burnsville, MN—Minnesotans including TakeAction Minnesota members and state Representative Erin Maye Quade, held a news conference and protest today outside Representative Jason Lewis’s Burnsville office, calling attention to the GOP’s health care repeal and Medicaid cuts. The group underscored the Republican proposal that cuts health care from millions of American families while giving $600 billion in tax breaks to the wealthy and corporations, as part of a national day of action.
GOP Senators are expected to vote on a bill that closely resembles the American Health Care Act (AHCA) before the end of June. The AHCA takes coverage away from 23 million people, increases costs for older people and people with pre-existing conditions, waters down coverage and ends Medicaid as we know it. The AHCA would eliminate health coverage for millions to pay for tax cuts for millionaires. In Minnesota, 251,000 would lose coverage while 5,870 households earning over $1 million would get an average tax break of $31,925.
In addition to tax breaks for wealthy individuals, the AHCA also includes $145 billion over ten years in tax breaks for big insurance companies and $25 billion over ten years in tax breaks for prescription drug companies. … Continue reading »

Tom Emmer will directly effect themselves and their families. Together, we have attempted to share our stories with Tom Emmer multiple times in many different ways, and his actions in DC show that he is not hearing us or responding to our concerns, particularly on health care and the devastating impacts of the AHCA (also known as TrumpCare). Together, Concerned Citizens of District Six have raised money from every day people to share their concerns with Tom Emmer via several billboards placed around the Sixth District.

Rural America carried President Donald Trump to his election night upset last November.
Trump Country it may be, but rural counties and small towns also make up Medicaid Country — those parts of the nation whose low-income children and families are most dependent on the federal-state health insurance program, according to a report released Wednesday.
Medicaid’s enrollment has swollen to more than 72 million in recent years, and the ranks of uninsured Americans has fallen to 9 percent in 2015 from 13 percent in 2013. That’s largely due to the Affordable Care Act, which allowed states to expand Medicaid eligibility with federal funds. Thirty-one states plus the District of Columbia did so.
Those gains may be in jeopardy under a GOP- and White House-backed health care measure called the American Health Care Act that would replace major parts of the ACA — known as Obamacare — and dramatically cut federal funding for Medicaid. The House passed the bill in May.
“There is no doubt that children and families in small towns would be disproportionately harmed by cuts to Medicaid,” said Joan Alker, executive director of the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families.
According to the center’s new report, Medicaid covered 45 percent of children and 16 percent of adults in small towns and rural areas in 2015.… Continue reading »
