Statement on the Trump Administration’s Decision to End DACA

September 5, 2017

NEWS STATEMENT

St. Paul—Today, the Trump Administration announced its decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy. Since President Obama ordered the measure, approximately 800,000 youth who are undocumented, or Dreamers as they’ve called themselves, have been protected from being deported from the United States. Many have lived here most of their lives. Thousands of Minnesota Dreamers await further action from Congress. TakeAction Minnesota released the following statement:

“We believe in a Minnesota where all people feel safe to live in their communities, to thrive, and to belong. TakeAction Minnesota stands in solidarity with undocumented youth and their families – people who have made this country their home and who should have the opportunity to realize their dreams.

President Trump’s decision to end DACA has fueled fear across our state—for our friends, families, neighbors, classmates, and colleagues. With the legal status of Dreamers left in the hands of Congress, Minnesota’s Congressional Delegation must stand up for members of our community, and for unity.”

We urge Minnesotans to join Navigate MN and other partners at a march and rally today at 4 p.m., starting at the GOP headquarters in Minneapolis.

NEWS RELEASE

Progressive champions Joel Sipress, Zack Filipovich, Barb Russ and Renee Van Nett will move Duluth forward

St. Paul, MNTakeAction Minnesota announced its endorsements for Joel Sipress (District 2), Renee Van Nett (District 4), Zack Filipovich (at-large), and Barb Russ (at-large) for Duluth City Council. The Board of Directors of the statewide people’s organization ratified members’ recommendation in August. The endorsement comes as the City Council moves closer to passing a sensible earned sick and safe time policy, a priority for TakeAction members in Duluth.

“Our endorsed candidates include progressive leaders fighting with us for earned sick and safe time. Each candidate understands the playing field isn’t level for workers and families—but it can and must be improved locally,” said Dan McGrath, TakeAction Minnesota’s executive director. “City hall is where progress is happening right now. These City Council candidates exemplify TakeAction Minnesota’s commitment to democracy and equity. We’ll do everything we can to make sure they win in November.”

Candidates that have TakeAction Minnesota’s endorsement will be backed by grassroots organizing forces known for pushing candidates across the finish line. For TakeAction Minnesota, municipal races lay important groundwork to expand the electorate and engage new voters heading into 2018. … Continue reading »

Can the DFL reconnect with rural Minnesotans?

August 2, 2017

If you look at the electoral map of Minnesota in 2016, it’s possible to conclude that the DFL no longer is a statewide party.

One little exercise brings that point home: If you subtract all the votes cast in Hennepin and Ramsey Counties in the 2016 election, Donald Trump would have easily carried Minnesota, with 58 percent of the vote.

As it was, Hillary Clinton defeated Trump, with 46.1 percent of the statewide vote. But she carried just nine of the state’s 87 counties. And not only did Trump crush Clinton in Greater Minnesota, but Republicans won control of both houses of the Legislature.
