People’s House Series: Rep. Aisha Gomez on Taxes, Abundance, and Interdependence
April 24, 2019
When I came to the legislature I didn’t expect to be working on taxes so much.
But I’ve found that it’s a place to stand up for working people and those suffering under the deepest wealth and income inequality in generations.
It’s a place to push back against the legacies of settler colonialism and slavery which are the basis for our entire economy and are in part responsible for Minnesota having the deepest racial disparities in the country.
Rep. Aisha Gomez, 62B and member of the House Tax CommitteeIt’s a place to reject the lie of trickle down economics and the politics of austerity and assert that we have enough.
It’s a place where we can make the case that our natural state as humans is not ruthless competition and utility maximizing but interdependence and relationship.
That another world is possible if we make different decisions.
Last night just before midnight we passed a tax bill that increases taxes on capital gains, prevents the estate tax exemption from going up, brings back money that corporations are stashing in overseas tax shelters, and makes big investments in the Working Family Tax Credit.
Beyond the direct investments that are in the Tax bill, it is our insistence that the wealthy and corporations pay their fair share that is making all the other parts of the budget possible: debt-free college, historic investments in education, community-based public safety, and so much more.… Continue reading »

Paid Sick Time Clears First Hurdle at the Capitol
House Labor Committee advances Earned Sick and Safe Time
ST. PAUL— On Wednesday, Minnesotans from across the state came to the Capitol for the first legislative hearing for HF11, a bill to ensure all Minnesotans have Earned Sick and Safe Time to care for our families.
One person making the trip St. Cloud resident Raye Perez (they/them). Raye was 12 years old the first time they missed school to take care of their brother with asthma.
Growing up, neither of Perez’s parents had paid sick time. Their mother works as a medical receptionist. Perez’s father, a military veteran, works maintenance at a hospital and is going to school.
Despite taking college-level courses in high school, Perez was berated by teachers for missing class so frequently. There wasn’t another option for Perez, the oldest of five siblings. Perez’s parents couldn’t afford to miss a paycheck.
Perez, 20, is studying to be a social studies teacher at St. Cloud State University. They carry a lot of animosity for having to miss out on part of their education.… Continue reading »

NEWS STATEMENT: TakeAction Minnesota Statement on DFL House Minnesota Values Agenda
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NEWS STATEMENT
TakeAction Minnesota Statement on DFL House Minnesota Values AgendaSt. Paul—Today, the Minnesota House DFL released their Minnesota Values Agenda, unveiling their top ten priorities for the 2019 legislative session. Among the priorities included the MinnesotaCare Buy-In, Paid Family and Medical Leave and Earned Sick and Safe Time, and Protecting Minnesotans from sexual harassment.
TakeAction Minnesota Executive Director Elianne Farhat released the following statement:
“When Minnesotans voted in November, we were clear about our shared vision for our state. Minnesotans are ready to make those visions a reality—and so our DFL representatives. We have a bold vision for care in our state that includes a pathway to universal, affordable health care, as well as statewide policies like Paid Family and Medical Leave and Earned Sick and Safe Time (ESST). ESST has already passed in three cities in Minnesota. No one should have to choose between caring for themselves and a loved one or a paycheck, no matter where they work or how much money they make.
And like our DFL representatives, TakeAction Minnesota members are committed to fighting alongside survivors who are breaking the culture that perpetuates workplace harassment. We heal collectively when we transform the social and political systems underlying gender oppression. Ending the “severe and pervasive” clause in Minnesota’s sexual harassment standard is part of that healing and progress. … Continue reading »
Testify for One $15 Wage
Our movement is winning! After years of workers organizing, rallying, and raising our voices, Saint Paul is moving towards raising the minimum wage to $15/hour with no tip penalty.
e
On September 12th, the City Council will hear the report from a Study Committee that has been doing policy research on the minimum wage. The task force voted with 77% support in favor of a $15 minimum wage with no tip penalty, confirming the policy that workers have been championing for years is right for Saint Paul.
We’re closer than ever to winning $15, but we need to make sure it’s the strongest policy possible. That means no carve-outs that leave workers behind, a quick phase-in to get workers the raises we need, and well-funded enforcement to defend the wage.
Come pack the room to show your support for a $15 minimum wage for ALL workers, NO exemptions, as quickly as possible! If you live or work in Saint Paul, plan to testify about what a $15 minimum wage would mean for you and your community.
Fight for $15 Rally & Action
Join us in St. Paul, MN at 2:00 p.m. for a Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival rally and action.
All working Minnesotans deserve a living wage. But with our minimum wage stuck far below the cost of living, thousands Minnesotans are working full time and still fighting to make ends meet. That’s why Saint Paul workers are organizing to raise the minimum wage to $15, with no carve-outs or exemptions! We’re calling on City Hall to fight poverty, not the poor. Join in solidarity with low-wage workers to stand up for a $15 minimum wage without carve-outs.
